I Can Hear The Birds

“But oh, why would you leave me so ?“

“My choice was not amiss, the gods decided my fate and none would be the wiser to contradict such judgement. You have defied Hades for me, I do not know if the foolishness of this action is due to the bravery of grief or the desperation of your love for me.”

“I could not bear to see you go, how can my heart beat when yours is not as well ? My breath was short, my skin was grey, my voice was weakened as my cries grew stronger, the world was dark and light only came when I lit my first candle to guide me to you ! It is not foolish to love someone as much as I love you.”

“Can’t you see how this light blinded your senses ? A possibility was not an opportunity, you could have died and you would be down there with me without your love to keep you warm ! We would have to face each other without ever truly knowing who we were, side by side with no way of escape. You risked your songs for a yearning not even a god could stop. Nothing scares me more than to know you have gone down, dead or alive, without truly living yet.”

“How can I live when music does not sound right anymore ? I was dying, I was decaying, without you I was nothing but a man holding a lyre, no purpose to guide me, no muse to inspire me.”

“Orpheus, this world is big. Women more beautiful than I walked this earth before me and will walk so after I go!”

“But they will never be you ! They will be beautiful but will they be sweet ? Will they be kind ? Would they care so much as to see me go down to get them back and still think about my safety before all else ? You cannot truly miss something that can be done twice and you are unique Eurydice, a beauty brighter than the sun and a spirit quicker than the wind. I have never missed something as much as I missed you”

“It is madness Orpheus, and I do not know what to think of such a feat anymore...”

“You do not have time to think, we must walk at once to reach the fields before sunset, our love burns deeper than the fire of Tartarus, questioning it would be impossible.”

“How can you be so sure of such a thing ?”

“It is all I know. It is all I feel. Do you love me ?”

“Yes, I do, but doubt can only cripple when nothingness was your only knowledge for a time”

“Do not fret, my love. Your memories will flow once your bare feet touches the soft grass you once loved so much.”

“I do remember the grass but the feel of it is unknown to my touch. I cannot say for certain if I know the smell of Lily’s but I remember their softness, the rain is cold but I know my tear will never be able to replicate it’s melancholy, your touch is as warm but never as dangerous as fire.”

“You smell like Lily’s, you always did and even in death you always do.”

“Is it true ? I can only smell smoke in the air.”

“Yes it is, I cannot lie to you even if the gods told me to.”

“It is a lie, you cannot refuse a god.”

“But I just did so.”

“No, you did not refuse, Orpheus, you defied.”

“Yes, and I did it all for you.”

“And you should not have.”

“How could I not defy the man who took you from me ?”

“I would see your point if it was an actual man and not a god !”

“A god is only a man whose time is infinite, whose power is absolute and whose heart is still beating like mine own do at this moment.”

“Orpheus, please, stop it, you are truly blinded by your rage…”

“My rage is only fair, he does not understand my misery, losing you was agony and Hades could never understand such a despair.”

“He does.”

“He cannot.”

“You do not want to believe it, but he understands your feelings better than anyone. Every year he sees his love go, taken by the sun, by the longest days and the warmest nights, for 6 moons he grieve for his wife gone into the light and he will do so for the next eternity to come.”

“But he gets to see her after all !”

“You would do too if you waited a while longer.”

“I did not and now you are behind me, alive, speaking in defence of our common enemy and even if I did wait, we would have been stranger after all.”

“I would have preferred you a stranger than a foolish child who thinks love is good enough of a reason to defy the gods !”

“...”

“...”

“Would you do it?”

“What do you mean by that ?”

“Would you defy the gods for me ?”

“Orpheus…”

“Be truthful to me Eurydice, I beg you.”

“I cannot.”

“Do you love me truly ? Have you ever loved me ?”

“None can tell or none will say, but I have loved you until my dying breath, this love is no more my sweet Orpheus. I wish to see the light of the day again but that desire does not outweighs the pain I would have to bear not loving the man I once cherished, looking at you now is as sweet as honey and as bitter as any citrus this life could give”

“I cannot think this true, Eurydice ! Tell me you love me. Swear to me your heart beat faster when you hear my voice. Promise me it is really you and not an illusion I created !”

“Do you feel my hand holding yours ? I am here, but I do not wish to be. My love for you has faded with my life, I swore under the stars to love you until death do us apart and I kept my promise. As death did us apart, my love died with me and now that I am here, it is long gone. My heart bleeds for you, Orpheus. But it cannot truly beat again like it once did.”

“Lies ! I refuse to believe it ! Hades is tricking me, he wants me to turn ! They want me to break ! The end is so near, can you hear the birds singing ? Can you see the green grass getting taller than the trees ? Oh Eurydice, can’t you see ? Can’t you smell the flowers blooming above us ? They will fit so beautiful in your hair ! Do not tell me you do not love me anymore, for I know you do, you have to, because I do love you too, and the wind will sing about our love for the next generations to come. Even the gods own immortality will fade as the lyricist will sing the song of Orpheus and Eurydice.”

“I can only hear the beating of my own heart, the taste of the blood in my mouth is made of iron and life, and only I can see you Orpheus. Your love outshine the nature I wish to see, it outgrows the trees I wish to climb, it outlived me, Orpheus. I can only walk in the shadow of an affection greater than my own. Orpheus, oh my dear Orpheus, why don’t you turn so I can see a glimpse of the world I have lost so desperately !”

“Temptations, tricks, nothing will make me turn not even your pleads ! We will reach the fields and stay there for the rest of our lives, happy and content and the world will sing our song.”

“Our song was never meant to end beautifully, Orpheus. The rivers whispered of my demise and the nymphs praised your sadness, please, you swore to be truthful to me, you swore to protect me, now please, just let me go.”

“I love you too much for that !”

“No, you do not love me enough !”

“I do !”

“If you did, you would turn, see me one last time and let me fade back into the dark !”

“It is a trick, I know it !”

“...”

“...”

“Orpheus...”

“Yes”

“I can hear the birds”

“How can you...”

The end.
